We knew it would be just a matter of time until we saw a desktop that would use i7's capabilities not just to break preexisting speed records but to mock them outright. We just thought it would take a little longer than it has. Maingear's astounding—and expensive—F131 has done it already...The F131 has Outstanding performance; lots of features, expandability options ....The Core i7-based Maingear F131 is one of the fastest systems we've ever tested

We've seen a lot of portable, small-form-factor (SFF) desktops, but never one quite like the Maingear X-Cube. With dimensions approximately 11x11.4x14.4 inches, it almost lives up to its name, and its stark matte-black color definitely screams "imposing." But the most surprising thing about this $2,884.84 desktop isn't what's on the outside, it's what's on the inside.

Maingear has crammed a full liquid-cooling system into the X-Cube—without so much as leaving water pipes or radiators hanging out the back.

Maingear builds quality systems without bloatware or clogged installations, ships them well, and all evidence shows they support them 100%. Their website is easy to order from, overclocking is "free" and covered under warranty, and their component choices are solid. You really do get the impression that these systems are hand-built with care.

Maingear’s Ephex is available in Skull-trail, CrossFireX, and Tri-SLI configurations. We got our hands on the Tri-SLI version, which sports Maingear’s green Flamewerks paint job (well worth the $999.99); the Ephex had one of the more skillful paint jobs of the bunch. For the Ephex, Maingear uses a variation of the popular Silverstone TJ10. A green cold-cathode light mounted to the back panel eerily lights the internal components through a clear acrylic window.

Where Maingear stands out is their customer service and build quality. A direct line to the individual who built our machine is worth the premium alone. It makes the computer a much more personal buy, unlike a pre-built system from a store or some large volume manufacturer’s website. In addition to that, we got top of the line hardware, excellent build quality and wiring job. In terms of a turn key system, the Maingear is by far the best, having absolutely no issues whatsoever during our testing.

Boutique PC builders such as Maingear are quick to jump on the bandwagon when products like this, which are targeted to the performance enthusiast, hit the market. Without question, three high-end graphics cards chained together in a system like the Maingear Ephex is the type of setup that caters to a select niche within a niche.
